Our Top LSAT Guides
► #1 PowerScore LSAT Bible Trilogy
There is simply no better resource for LSAT preparation on the market than PowerScore’s LSAT Bibles, authored by David Killoran (the founder of PowerScore) and Steven Stein. If you are looking for the three most effective and best LSAT prep books for each aspect of the test, this set – the PowerScore LSAT Bible Trilogy – fully delivers.
The first book, the Logical Reasoning Bible, provides clear and detailed instructions for developing approaches for surmounting every type of problem in the Logical Reasoning section. The Logical Reasoning Bible also offers drills for improving identification and solving of different types of Logical Reasoning problems as well as useful advice for quick elimination of wrong answers.
Almost 700 pages in length, this LSAT preparation book is not suited for quick study. The techniques and tips offered require significant practice on the test-taker’s part to develop. However, they are extremely useful and effective for ambitious test-takers.
The second book is the Logic Games Bible. The Logic Games section is undoubtedly one of the most difficult aspects of the LSAT. Not surprisingly, therefore, many test-takers find that the Logic Games portion of the test is their LSAT Achilles heel.
Enter the PowerScore Logic Games Bible. This best-selling guide is easily one of the very best LSAT prep books for for this part of the test, offering clear and easy-to-master techniques for approaching each of the different types of games as well as guidance on where to look to make deductions and how best to draw inferences. Given its use of actual LSAT questions and its provision of thorough explanations, the PowerScore Logic Games Bible is an excellent and highly-recommended source for tackling the Logical Games section.
The final book in the PowerScore Bible trilogy is the Reading Comprehension Bible. This LSAT study guide offers strategies for decoding and deconstructing reading passages and questions.
The book spends considerable effort in categorizing each of the different types of questions a test-taker might encounter in this section. It also offers tips and strategies for focusing on the important aspects of the passage.
Although this guide is perhaps not as strong as the other two books in the series, the Reading Comprehension Bible nonetheless provides a plethora of useful information on breaking down the test’s reading comprehension section. Thus, it is still one of the 10 best LSAT preparation books and a worthy part of the LSAT Bible Trilogy, which overall is simply a must-buy.
► #2 The PowerScore LSAT Bible Workbook Trilogy
PowerScore’s LSAT Bible Workbook Trilogy are companion books to the PowerScore Bibles reviewed above. Included in the trilogy are the Logical Reasoning Bible Workbook, the Logic Games Bible Workbook, and the Reading Comprehension Bible Workbook. While we debated strongly amongst our team about whether these books should be included as part of the PowerScore LSAT Bible Trilogy review, we decided that these can be used as stand-alone resources if you are simply looking for solid practice (although the publisher strongly urges you to read the LSAT Bible Trilogy before using these workbooks, and we agree that is the best use of these resources).
These books are not manuals but, as their names suggests, true workbooks in which test-takers can hone their skills. Although all three workbooks are outstanding, the Logic Games Workbook is particularly strong. Now revised for 2017, the book begins with drills in which isolated skills can be practiced over and over again. It then provides 10 individual games, taken from actual LSATs, which enable the test-taker to apply and reinforce the skills picked up in the drills. Finally, it offers five complete Logic Games sections, allowing the test-taker to replicate testing conditions for this difficult portion of the test.
While we recommend these books be used in conjunction with the PowerScore Bible Trilogy, it isn’t mandatory. There is no cross-over material in terms of test questions or logic games, so the workbooks are also worth spending the money on if you have already purchased the LSAT Bible Trilogy and are concerned there won’t be anything new in these books. There definitely is! With nearly 1000 pages of workbook materials between the three books, these really are a great resource to help you fully prepare for taking the LSAT.
► #3 The LSAT Trainer
What is even better than working out regularly by yourself? Answer: To have your own personal trainer.
Just like getting your body into shape, taking the LSAT works best if you have someone by your side to motivate and guide you along every step of the way. For those who prefer self-study over more costly alternatives, Mike Kim’s 2017 edition of The LSAT Trainer: A Remarkable Self-Study Guide for the Self-Driven Student will assume the role of a personal trainer.
Mike Kim, experienced tutor and one of the brains behind the Manhattan LSAT prep system, is an expert at explaining what it takes to master the LSAT. His writing style is clear and the advice always easy to follow. At its core, the LSAT Trainer is about teaching you how to adapt your thinking to LSAT problems and – through practice –how to apply LSAT specific knowledge. There is a fine line between teaching ‘thinking’ and traditional approaches that focus mostly on strategies and knowledge. However, Kim and his LSAT Trainer achieve this goal. Importantly, Kim is not hiding the ball; you will always know the reasoning behind learning various skill-sets that and how they will help you tackle LSAT questions.
Just like a personal trainer, the author will make you (and your brain’s LSAT muscles) stronger by pushing you to work harder. The book contains over thirty practice drills and 200+ authentic LSAT problems carefully woven into substantive lessons and strategic advice. Throughout the book’s 21 chapters, the author follows his five mantras, which include making things simple and effective. As a welcome bonus, Mike Kim even offers free LSAT study schedules that can be downloaded from the LSAT Trainer website.
The LSAT trainer, however, has – by design – certain limitations. As the guide readily acknowledges, test-takers should combine their use of the LSAT Trainer with other LSAT review books as well as LSAC’s official practice exams consisting of previously administered tests (see further below on this page). Moreover, the LSAT Trainer – although weighing in at an impressive 600 pages itself – is an all-rounder book that simply cannot go into as much detail on a specific section of the test as specialized books, particularly PowerScore’s top rated ‘LSAT Bible’ series. Nevertheless, Mike Kim and his LSAT Trainer are rising stars among the best LSAT prep books.
► #4 Barrons LSAT
The second edition of Barron’s LSAT prep book was published in May 2017, making it one of the most current LSAT prep books on the market. There is just so much to like about this book! It’s one of the few LSAT prep books that offers a diagnostic test right at the beginning. This will give you a baseline of your current knowledge so you can better focus your study time on your weaker areas. Barron’s also includes a detailed 3-month study plan. If you are looking for a roadmap to help you organize your precious study time, this study plan will help you stay motivated and on track. They also include study tips and test taking strategies for each section, including time management strategies, which will help you fully prepare for the experience of taking the test.
Barron’s includes a sample test with explanations and an answer key in the book. As an added bonus, you can take two additional practice tests online. These online tests are timed, which helps you try out the test-taking strategies you learned in the book. These types of realistic, timed tests not only help you prepare for taking the LSAT, but they are also great to help calm your nerves on test day. The more realistic practice you have, the more confident you will be when you are sitting for the real exam. You have ”been there, done that” so to speak!
Barron’s LSAT prep book is the first book on our Best LSAT Prep Books that includes all the information you need in one 768-page volume. While they do include a review of each section of the test, they can’t go into the level of detail found in the other specialized LSAT prep books we review here. However, while it is still a big book, it is the only book that you need to carry with you if you want to study on the go. You don’t ever have to worry if you grabbed the wrong book! If you are looking for test prep book that includes a decent review for each of the LSAT sections along with great study tips and realistic practice tests, this is the perfect LSAT prep book for you.
Official LSAT Practice Materials
In addition to the books outlined above, it is also vital that LSAT test-takers prepare using the Law School Admission Council’s collections of official, previously administered tests. We particularly recommend the following must-have LSAC test collections (for convenience, by using the link below all of them as a set/collection can be viewed in an Amazon shopping cart).
The Official LSAT SuperPrep II
The Official LSAT SuperPrep II is currently one of LSAC ‘s latest – and perhaps its most essential – publication.
This guide contains an introduction to all types of LSAT questions as well as tips and strategies on how to tackle the LSAT in terms of timing and pacing. The most important element of SuperPrep II, of course, are the three previously administered LSAT tests that are bundled in this guide.
To be clear, although released in July 2015, this book does not contain the latest LSAT tests, such as the one administered in December 2015 (Official LSAT PrepTest 77). Instead, LSAT SuperPrep II featured tests are PrepTest 62 (December 2010), PrepTest 63 (June 2011), and another previously undisclosed test. The tests are accompanied by newly written explanations for all of the questions, answer keys, writing samples, and tables for easy score conversion. In short, as LSAC say themselves, LSAT SuperPrep is their best LSAT prep book series, and SuperPrep II is the best of the best.
10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests Volume V: 62 through 71
Practice makes perfect! In addition to the Official LSAT SuperPrep book we reviewed above, LSAC publishes a series of books that include past versions of real LSAT tests so you can practice on the real thing. There is simply no better practice test on the market than past versions of the real LSAT, which LSAC delivers. LSAC includes answer keys and writing samples for each test, score-conversion tables, and sample Comparative Reading questions and explanations. The series includes:
10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests Volume V: PrepTests 62 – 71: This is the very latest in the series and includes tests administered between December 2010 and December 2013.
10 New Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests: Contains PrepTests 52 – 61 administered from 2007 to 2010.
The 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests 42 – 51: These tests were administered between December 2003 and December 2006.
The older tests found in other volumes in the series are becoming very dated. While still relevant if you really need additional practice taking the test, the three latest volumes noted here are simply the best practice tests you will find on the market, and a must have for your LSAT test preparation.
10 New Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests
Containing 10 actual LSAT tests, this book provides previously administered tests from 2007 to 2010 (PrepTests 52-61).
While the book does not provide any guidance on strategies for taking the LSAT, it does provide a single source for some of the most recent LSATs, offering test-takers a one-stop shop for highly effective LSAT practice.
Highly recommended, as are all the other titles in LSAC’s top rated official test prep series.
The Official LSAT SuperPrep
This book, put together by the Law School Admission Council – aka the official LSAT test maker – compiles three former February LSATs from 1996, 1999, and 2000.
However, a unique feature of this book is that it provides explanations for every section on these tests from the people who actually draft the LSAT. The explanations that accompany the answers are thorough and cogent. However, the book itself does not offer the level of strategic advice found in non-official LSAT prep guides.
In sum, the Official LSAT SuperPrep is a very useful tool for understanding the LSAT from the perspective of those that write it. As such, it is one of the best LSAT prep books and simply a must-have for every thorough LSAT student.
The Next 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests
Practice, practice, and more practice makes perfect. The last item in our list of the Top 10 best LSAT prep books is one more tool in the practice arsenal for the test. Containing ten actual previously administered LSAT tests from October 1999 to October 2002, this book provides an ample source for early rounds of practice.
Of special note, this title does not contain comprehensive reading questions that were introduced in June 2007. For more recent official tests you should go with the latest volumes in LSAC’s official test series, which are all among the best LSAT prep books.
Bonus Tips for Additional Resources
Kaplan LSAT Logical Reasoning Strategies and Tactics
For a systematic approach to the Logical Reasoning section of the LSAT, and an alternative to the PowerScore books, you should also have a look at this book.
Offering a guided approach to these problems, this book helps you identify the type of Logical Reasoning question you are encountering and provides you with a methodology for answering that question. In addition, there are numerous drills and practice opportunities to review and repeat the Kaplan method. In particular, the consistent approach to solving Logical Reasoning problems is one of the book’s key assets. In its current edition, Logical Reasoning Strategies & Tactics now includes two complete logical reasoning practice sections and provides access to four additional sections online.
Conclusion: A good study tool and among the best LSAT prep books for this section of the test.
LSAT Strategy Guide Set
This three-book set from Manhattan Prep is designed for people looking to achieve top scores on the LSAT. Manhattan Prep’s philosophy is that students learn better from better teachers, and test prep books should be written by great educators. Seems simple enough, but we have found that often books are written by people that are experts in their fields, but have no practical teaching experience! This LSAT Strategy Guide Set is actually used in Manhattan Prep’s LSAT courses, and written by their highly-qualified course instructors. They are excellent resources for self-paced study. They offer the most thorough review with full explanations of each section of the LSAT that you will find on the market to help top performers achieve greater success on test day.
The set includes LSAT Logic Games, which is one of the best Logic Games book we reviewed. The book details every type of logic game you will encounter on your LSAT, and includes strategies for how to manage your precious time during your exam. Manhattan Prep doesn’t just want you to succeed in this section of the test, they want you to master Logic Games, and include timed drills to help hone your skills. Also included in the set are the LSAT Logical Reasoning book and the LSAT Reading Comprehension book.
These books stand out from the rest because of the level of detail they go into for how to identify and break down each type of question found in each section of the LSAT. Manhattan Prep also includes access to their online portal with the purchase of this set, where you can find additional educational resources including recordings from their LSAT prep classes.
Each of the books in this set can be purchased individually, which is a big help if you only want to focus your LSAT prep on one section of the test. We do highly recommend buying the entire set though to ensure you get that top score you are trying to achieve.
Kaplan LSAT Premier 2016 – 2017 with Real Practice Questions
Kaplan is an industry leader in test prep, and like Manhattan Prep they often offer their course books as resources for people who don’t want or can’t take the full classroom experience. The Kaplan LSAT Premier 2016 – 2017 was written by Kaplan’s highly qualified LSAT course trainers and includes test-taking strategies, realistic practice questions, and a full-length practice test, which will help you prepare for the experience of taking the LSAT.
What makes this LSAT test prep book really unique though are all the additional online resources you get with your purchase. Kaplan is known for their prep courses, and with the purchase of this book you can access online workshops and class recordings from their previous LSAT prep classes. If you like to learn from an instructor but can’t take a full course, this is as close as you will get to that type of learning experience. Kaplan also offers online performance analytics so you see what areas you still need further study to get the score you want on the test.
While the book itself is useful, this is really the best resource if you want online, teacher-led instruction without registering for a full course.
The LSAT Logic Puzzle Book: Are You Smarter than a Lawyer?
If you want to master the Logic Games portion of the LSAT, this book is one of best resources. At 178 pages this book gets straight to the point in teaching you the strategies you need to work through one of the most difficult parts of the LSAT. But it doesn’t just focus on test-taking strategies. Author Jeff Kolby uses 13 official LSAT games from past tests to teach you analytical reasoning skills, which will help you immensely in law school and throughout your career. Overall this is a great book to guide you through Logic Games to help you get the top score you want on your LSAT.

Are you ready to take your LSAT? The LSAT is administered four times a year: September, December, February, and June. You can find a list of testing centers near you and test dates here. You should research the admissions requirements at your law school choices to determine the best time to take your exam. As most schools only take your top score, if you didn’t get the score you want on your first try it is highly recommended that you try again. As we noted earlier, a score of even a few points higher could mean all the difference to get into your top choice program or land a good scholarship!
